Performing Arts

The Shawnee Music Program is recognized throughout the area for its class and high standards of excellence. Our program provides students with a quality education in music and musical performance, while also fostering important life skills such as hard work, dedication and teamwork. We are committed to developing well-rounded musicians who excel both on and off the stage.

Band & Orchestra

What Students Experience
  • Learn to play woodwind, brass and percussion instruments
  • Build tone, technique and proper playing posture
  • Strengthen music-reading skills through daily practice
How We Learn
Students rehearse together while working on rhythm, ensemble balance and following a conductor. They explore different styles of music while meeting state standards for performance, literacy and creative expression.
 
Skills Beyond Music
Band members develop focus, teamwork, responsibility and confidence as they learn to care for their instruments, practice independently and contribute to a unified sound.
 
Performances
Throughout the year, students showcase their progress at school concerts and community events (see above), gaining valuable experience in professionalism, stage etiquette and collaboration.

Choir

What We Do
  • Begin with vocal warm-ups

Show Choir

In show choir, students don’t just rehearse, they collaborate, create and celebrate the joy of performance. They develop the confidence, discipline and artistry that will support them in music, theater and any future path they pursue.
What We Do
  • Begin each class with vocal warm-ups that build singing habits
  • Explore pitch, breath control, tone and ensemble blending
  • Strengthen skills that support state fine arts standards for musical performance and literacy
Music + Movement
  • Learn choreography using piano accompaniment, recorded tracks or choreographer videos
  • Practice combining singing and dance, focusing on timing, posture, expression and stamina
Collaboration & Growth
  • Work together to refine harmonies, choreography formations and musical expression
  • Learn to give and receive constructive feedback
  • Build discipline, teamwork and communication skills 
Leadership & Life Skills
  • Students gain confidence through small-group work, solos and section leadership
  • Grow creativity and the ability to work toward shared goals with other classmates

Drama

Drama gives students a space to imagine, create and grow to develop skills that support future success in theatre, school and everyday life. 
What We Do
  • Explore acting, improvisation, storytelling and character creation
  • Learn basic technical theatre skills such as sets, costumes, props, lighting and sound
  • Build foundations in performance, collaboration and expression
Theatre Skills
  • Practice voice, movement and stage presence
  • Analyze scripts and create characters
  • Work in groups to develop scenes, improv activities and short performances
Collaboration & Growth
  • Support peers through teamwork and ensemble-building exercises
  • Learn communication, empathy and problem-solving
Performance Opportunities
  • Participate in after-school productions such as a play and/or musical
  • Learn responsibility, time management and professionalism through public performances

Advanced Art

Art students develop creativity, skill and confidence, always working on fresh projects that highlight their unique talents.
What We Do
  • Study the elements of art and principles of design
  • Create two-dimensional projects using a wide range of tools and media
Artistic Skills
  • Work with graphite, colored pencil, markers, oil/chalk pastels, watercolor, tempera and acrylic paint
  • Practice hand-eye coordination and craftsmanship
Collaboration & Growth
  • Complete solo, partner and group projects
  • Gain confidence through experimenting with new materials and techniques
Showcasing Student Work
  • Artwork is displayed in school exhibits, showcases and contests
  • Students may participate in events such as the Halloween Spooktacular, the Related Arts Festival, Northrop Spring Arts Festival, FAME and additional community competitions
